Poverty in the United States

Here’s a recent post from the forummatters.com poverty forum.

"From L.A to D.C poverty is affecting more Americans than ever. It's probably safe to say we have all seen this growing issue in America. The question is now what can we possibly do to stop this problem, and quite frankly we can't. Poverty has been around longer than all of our lives (maybe even put together). We can however, decrease poverty in America. How you might ask? Well it depends on whether you believe we, as American people, should make the government promote the progress of poverty or the individuals in poverty to dig themselves out. Let's throw out some statistics, like the cost of living. We'll use my hometown Maryland and my county will be Montgomery. According to livingwage.geog.psu.edu the cost of living for a two adult, one child family is $54,329. The wage needed to meet this standard is about $26 an hour, however the poverty wage is about $8 (all current numbers can be found on livingwage.geog.psu.edu). What about the people between those two numbers, that seemingly small but, huge $18 difference. They still require help however they don't meet the standards to get the help. According to aspe.hhs.gov the poverty line set by the government for a three person family is $18,310 a year.
