Young people join gangs for a number of reasons. They can include
• money from crime/poverty
• boredom
• excitement
• territory
• friends
• identity
• a sense of belonging and been part of a family
• acceptance
• power over other people
• recognition, status, attention
• recognition, status, attention
• lack of knowledge as to the reality of the situation
• protection
• peer pressure, intimidation, threats and violent beatings may be used to force youths to join
• respect
• revenge
• reward
There may be others but these are generally recognised as most of the main reasons.
